Mother knows best - even if she's dead - in this unnerving supernatural thriller produced by Sam Raimi (The Evil Dead). Sandra Oh stars as single mum Amanda, who runs a remote beekeeping farm in America with her home-schooled daughter (Fivel Stewart). But Amanda is haunted by an abusive childhood at the hands of her brutally possessive Korean mother ("umma"). When a mysterious suitcase containing the ashes of her estranged tormentor arrives on her doorstep, followed by apparitions and bumps in the night, Amanda finds herself battling for her life and her identity. In her feature debut, writer/director Iris K Shim delivers atmosphere, tension, whirling camerawork and jump scares aplenty. Oh is impressive, but the emotional core of the film is left wanting by an all-too rushed climax.
