Don’t let this pass you by. It’s a rewarding dive into one of the great acting careers, with a string of warm contributors and good anecdotes. Tom Courtenay recalls John Gielgud’s tart put-down when he learnt that Alec Guinness was going to play Hamlet: “I don’t know why you don’t stick to playing those funny little men that you’re so good at.”

In fact, of course, Guinness was good in a remarkable range of roles — from underdogs to monsters, to an entire family in Kind Hearts and Coronets, to the enigmatic spy that placed him in the TV pantheon and the Jedi master that made him rich.

We get a sense of Guinness the man from co-stars and directors: shy, disciplined, sharp, occasionally cruel, but generous too, with a tendency to retreat behind the mask of a role. And apparently , he made beautiful sandcastles.
