While driving literary critic Christina to an interview with a novelist, Lane is involved in a serious car accident which leaves her friend severely brain-damaged. Deciding to undertake Christina's assignment herself, the uninjured Lane becomes attracted to the novelist's 15-year-old daughter, sparking a friendship that leads to jealousy and recrimination.
Alison Maclean makes an arresting feature debut with this dark treatise on sexual ambiguity, power games and identity crises. Metaphors abound as the mercenary Marcia Gay Harden exploits literary critic Donogh Rees's incapacity to move in on author William Zappa and his impressionable daughter, Caitlin Bossley. The bubbling mud of New Zealand's top tourist site Rotorua symbolises the seething emotions underlying the increasingly sinister events, while Harden's ruthless opportunism represents the threat of American cultural imperialism. All themes aside, though, this erotic psychological thriller eventually boils over into melodrama, with only the conviction of the performances preserving its credibility.
