This quirky whodunnit unfolds against the backdrop of a fiercely contested regional hairdressing competition, where wild accusations abound when one of the frontrunners is found dead by scalping. After a brief animated opening, the film gradually introduces a number of culprits united by a shared passion for outlandish hairdos and barbed insults, with hot-tempered Cleve (Clare Perkins) and flamboyant Angel (Luke Pasqualino) among those under suspicion. Written and directed by first-time feature film-maker Thomas Hardiman, and smartly edited to resemble one unbroken shot, this is a technically impressive work. The vivid production design is a highlight, creating an enticing world inhabited by eccentrics, while the manner in which the camera darts through narrow corridors lends the film a claustrophobic edge. The script itself is a little flat, with a few narrative strands that needed more teasing out, but this is nonetheless an enjoyable debut featuring strong performances from a committed cast.
