Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

American audiences have fond memories of a late 1960s made-for-TV version of Truman Capote's autobiographical novella. Patty Duke and Eric Lloyd don't quite measure up to Geraldine Page and Donnie Melvin in the original, but this adaptation still has its heart in the right place and makes a decent job of recapturing the atmosphere of Monroeville, Alabama, in the winter of 1934. There's an intrinsic charm about the relationship between the boy (Lloyd) and his older cousin (Duke), as they bake fruit cakes to give as Christmas presents to their neighbours, especially as the festive sentiment is tempered by a bittersweet ending.
