Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

There's no doubt that Carlos Reygadas's fifth feature can be tough going. Sprawling close to three hours, this extra-fictional treatise on the possessive nature of love, female entitlement and toxic patriarchal machismo has the director and his editor wife, Natalia López, playing a married couple on the Tlaxcala ranch they share with their co-starring children. Yet, while some of the symbolism seems a bit blatant (bulls goring mules and locking horns on clifftops), there's much to ponder as Juan struggles to cope after Esther breaks the rules of their open marriage by conducting a clandestine affair with an American horse-breaker (Phil Burgers). An opening tableau suggesting the moment at which childhood innocence ends, sets up the telenovella-like storyline. But, while Juan's fixation with the lovers is often unsettlingly intense, Reygadas frames it against such everyday events as the cattle basking in the misty morning sunshine, a plane flying over a nocturnal cityscape and percussionist Gabriela Jiménez giving a pulsating concert performance. Strikingly photographed by Diego Garcia, this is turbulent and testing, but it's also audacious and challenging.
