Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Music is low on director Barbara Kopple's list of priorities in this account of Woody Allen's 1996 European tour with his jazz band. Instead, she tags along as he's hurtled from pillar to post by civic and cultural dignitaries to receive awards and greet the great and the good (with a priceless mix of embarrassment and irritation). But it's the private moments with his then girlfriend - now his wife - Soon-Yi Previn that make this compelling portrait of a highly complex man so intriguing. Completely at home in the limelight, she comes across as the guiding light of their relationship. Yet, if you think she's overbearing, wait until you see Allen's parents in action during a hilarious coda.
