Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Principal Pictures borrowed from The Invisible Man, The Pit and the Pendulum and King Kong (at least RKO's Skull Island set) for this non-sequel follow-up to Chandu the Magician. Having played the villain in the original, Bela Lugosi returns in the title role in order to venture on to the magic island of Lemuria to prevent princess Maria Alba from being ritually sacrificed by Ubasti cult leader Lucien Prival. With crystal ball, shipwrecks, enchanted hourglasses and incantation-induced earth tremors, there's no shortage of incident. But, somehow, it's hard to accept Lugosi as a hero.
