Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

This feature shot wholly in Zulu was perhaps a surprise inclusion in the 2005 Oscar nominations for Best Foreign Language Film. The story of a devoted wife and mother who is ostracised by her once-friendly neighbours after she's diagnosed HIV positive is hardly original. But veteran director Darrell James Roodt recognises how calamitously this subject divides opinion in his native South Africa and has no qualms about overegging both the melodramatic and propagandist elements of Leleti Khumalo's mistreatment at the hands of both her promiscuous miner husband, Kenneth Khambula, and the village's ignorant faith healer, Nandi Nyembe.
