Melodrama starring Cary Grant as American brain surgeon Eugene Ferguson who becomes drawn into the politics of a volatile Latin American country when he is forced to perform a dangerous operation on the country's dictator (José Ferrer).
Cary Grant, the smooth embodiment of American decency in scores of Hollywood productions, strolls through this misfiring melodrama as a brain surgeon forced to perform a dangerous operation on a South American dictator. Ideas concerning repression and freedom are rather too obviously put forward in Richard Brooks's flawed directorial debut, but he went on to the rather more subtle The Blackboard Jungle, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and Elmer Gantry.
