Calum Baker

Deft plotting and a tight pace keep this largely routine single-location thriller chugging along nicely. Darby (Havana Rose Liu) hits the road to visit her sick mother but is waylaid by a snowstorm and forced to spend the night sheltering in a rest stop with four strangers. Popping outside to try to find phone reception, she discovers an abducted girl tied up in the back of a van. But who does the van belong to? And can Darby save the day without getting herself in trouble? Director Damien Power makes fine use of his snowbound setting to keep the tension simmering through the film's various twists and bursts of violent action. Much of the nocturnal drama is murky and underlit, but the screenplay (based on a pulp novel by Taylor Adams) ticks along with involving precision. It all makes for a perfectly competent popcorn flick, performed by an impressive cast that includes Danny Ramirez (Marvel's The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) and 24's Dennis Haysbert.
