Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Laden with filmic references, this is Tsai Ming-liang's most sardonic exploration of his perennial themes of impersonality and isolation in a teeming, urban world. Seemingly oblivious to the fact that his newly widowed mother is becoming increasingly distraught in her efforts to locate his father's reincarnated spirit, street vendor Li Kangsheng becomes so obsessed with Chen Shiang-chyi (a pretty stranger who bought his watch before heading for a miserably lonely sojourn in Paris) that he adjusts every chronometer he can find to share her time zone. Combining pathos, compassion, satire and deceptively scathing socio-cultural critique, this is an irresistible, minimalist delight.
