Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

William Castle's grisly gender-switch thriller was the first and most obvious Psycho clone (some contemporary critics even preferred it to the Hitchcock classic), taking transvestite terror to its illogical conclusion. A weird tale of decapitations, delirious dementia and dysfunctional drag, time has watered down Castle's sneaky surprises and tongue-in-cheek dénouement. However, while you won't need his fun "Fright Break" - 45 seconds to leave the cinema if too nervous to cope with the climax - Castle's prowess at powerhouse panic still rustles up some scares.
