George C Scott stars as a Michigan Calvinist searching for his errant daughter who has become a porn actress in Los Angeles. Scott's search leads him through a warren of massage parlours, nude encounters and snuff movies, but he maintains a chilly aloofness, nursing his bigotry and heading towards that inevitable explosion of violence. Written and directed by Michigan Calvinist Paul Schrader, this flawed but generally impressive transposition of The Searchers inhabits the same sleazy yet redemptive world as Schrader's script for Taxi Driver.
