Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

A young hustler makes his way in the rough and tumble world of New York's illicit bare-knuckle boxing scene in this slightly-more-than-formulaic slugfest. Leading man Channing Tatum showed his moves in the two Step Up dance flicks, but he also needs grim determination to hold his own against bigger, scarier opponents in these anything-goes bouts. The choreography's wincingly effective, yet, curiously enough, the film's far more impressive when the boys aren't knocking seven bells out of one another. That's when we notice that Tatum can actually act, bringing credible sweetness to the hackneyed romance subplot with waitress Zulay Henao, whose no-nonsense granny (Altagracia Guzmán, a treasure) almost steals the film from Terrence Howard's sad-eyed Harvey, the wily "fixer" who sets Tatum on his way. Director Dito Montiel, faced with a storyline that's cliché all the way, channels his energies into putting appreciable soul into the performances and grungy locations. The result is closer to Midnight Cowboy than any number of Jean-Claude Van Damme movies.
