Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Following the acclaimed Wedding in Galilee, Michel Khleifi attempted to meld drama with archive footage in this study of life in Gaza between the riots of the 1960s and the Intifada. The documentary material is particularly provocative, as various Palestinians recall the fighting that reduced their settlements to rubble and decimated a generation of their youth. The fictional segments, however, involving reunited lovers Bushra Karaman and Makram Khouri, are awash with pompous pronouncements which trivialise the genuine tragedy of this troubled region. Uncompromising in its politics yet naive in its execution, this is hard to watch but difficult to ignore.
