Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

This bleak tale of racial injustice is set in 1929 in Australia's Northern Territory, a sparsely populated area where racism and cruelty are commonplace. Sam (Hamilton Morris) is an Aboriginal farmhand who is forced to flee into the wilderness with his wife after a confrontation with a cruel white man (Ewen Leslie) ends violently. In pursuit of the pair is a group of men, including a local lawman (Bryan Brown) who refuses to turn back. Though the performances are excellent, particularly in a climactic courtroom scene, the pacing is glacial, and there are times when your attention may wander. But Warwick Thornton's film deserves plenty of credit for highlighting a dark chapter in Australian history.
