Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Fredi M Murer adapts his own novel with a directorial style as stark as the Alpine landscape, and a power and subtlety usually missing from films about incest. Had the performances not been so innocent and unabashed, however, the realism would have seemed embarrassingly phoney. Johanna Lier impresses as the teenage daughter of a Swiss hill farmer, but it's Thomas Nock who compels as the pubescent deaf-mute who relieves his frustrations by constructing a network of stone monuments in the isolated high ground. This isn't an easy film, but it's certainly a hypnotic one.
