Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

For all his visual flair, director Leos Carax's storytelling skills leave a lot to be desired. There's a carelessly pulpy quality about this futuristic thriller, in which Denis Lavant's commitment to the theft of a serum that cures a fatal disease afflicting only the romantically insincere is diminished by his growing obsession with Juliette Binoche, the mistress of fellow gang member, Michel Piccoli. Away from the plot's comic-book sensibilities, however, the compositions irresistibly recall the pictorial genius of film-makers as different as Fritz Lang and Jean-Luc Godard. A fascinating yet frustrating experience.
