Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

In this offbeat comedy drama, a family of villains suspect one of their gang is working as a police informant. Patriarch Bill (Robert Hill) is relieved when his son Karl (Robin Hill) avoids a prison sentence for drugs offences and returns to his parents' modest Brighton semi, from where his father directs his criminal activities. Bill then sets out to grill his gang to discover who the traitor might be, which inevitably leads to escalating violence and recriminations. Director Ben Wheatley's low-key tale recalls both the domestic mundanity of The Royle Family and the more sinister themes of betrayal and revenge in The Sopranos. It's an audacious balancing act, by turns shocking and comical, but the outlandish story does boast several naturalistic performances, with Julia Deakin especially impressive as Bill's wife Maggie.
