Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

A botched arrest has explosive repercussions in director Dante Lam's contrived yet solidly entertaining Hong Kong crime thriller. Frenetically paced and hugely atmospheric, this melodramatic tale of guilt and redemption sees tortured police sergeant Nicholas Tse embark on a very personal rescue mission when a young girl he's connected to by tragedy is kidnapped. The film's mix of tense action and strong emotion smartly elevates the standard events; tempering implausible plot points and an over-reliance on coincidence, while helping to give depth to the archetypal characters. Lam's gritty set pieces and satisfying final reveal are particularly impressive, with their impact heightened by the convincing central performances. Both Tse and youngster Suet Yin Wong elicit real sympathy in their mental and physical suffering, though it's Nick Cheung's more complex turn as the abductor that ultimately makes the movie - to be able to thought-provokingly humanise such a cold-blooded psychopath is no mean feat.
