Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

William Hartnell stars in this taut crime drama as a London dockworker imprisoned for the murder of his wife's lover, despite insisting the supposed victim is still alive. Released after 15 years behind bars, he sets out to clear his name, with the help of a down-on-his luck newspaper reporter (Jimmy Hanley). Director Montgomery Tully's script, based on a story by prolific writer Austin J Small, offers an intriguing premise that attempts to examine flaws in the judicial system. However, it is undermined by a succession of credulity-stretching coincidences and supporting characters whose behaviour borders on the stupid. That said, Hartnell acquits himself with quiet dignity, and look out for an early cameo by future singing star Petula Clark as his daughter.
