Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

The Russian version of Shakespeare's most famous tragedy was filmed by veteran director Grigori Kozintsev to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the playwright's birth. His treatment is a study of medieval state machinations, and is set in an Elsinore whose inhabitants are contained by an impressive fortress of stone and iron. It may lack the depth of other film versions, but the images, enriched by the dramatic Shostokovich music, are bold and powerful as is the great Russian actor Innokenti Smoktunovsky's Prince of Denmark, a man of action and not a brooding dreamer.
