David Parkinson
Director David Rocksavage's 1960s-set melodrama is an undeniably handsome but dramatically anaemic tale of family tensions. A whiff of danger pervades proceedings, like the smoke from the cannabis that loner Joe (Jamie Dornan) provides for widow Hannah (Jean Simmons) to help her cope with both the pain of a long illness and her isolation in a large house on the East Anglian coast. Her visiting son Robert (James Wilby) makes his reservations clear about Joe, but the stranger casts a very different spell over Robert's teenage daughter (Ophelia Lovibond) and her younger brother (Toby Marlow). The performances are admirable, while Milton Kam's camerawork revels in the landscapes that bask in the radiant Norfolk light. But there's something unpersuasively precious about Hannah's poetry readings, while too many incidents smack of metaphor rather than real life.
