Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Better than Warlock: the Armageddon, but not a patch on the original black magic frightener, director Eric Freiser's second sequel generates a fair amount of atmosphere and chills thanks to its unpretentious story that embroiders on haunted-house conventions. Art student Ashley Laurence (Hellraiser) takes possession of a family home she never knew existed and, with several of her schoolfriends, takes up residence to stop it being demolished. Enter architect Bruce Payne (slicing the theatrical ham thickly) who is really the Devil's disciple and wants Laurence for satanic sacrifice, using her friends weaknesses to achieve that aim. Featuring imaginative deaths among the usual slasher catalogue - a victim transformed into glass and shattered - and some keen visual trickery - Laurence watching herself run in an endless time loop - the overly generic and rather silly ending undercuts what meagre originality preceded it to detrimental effect.
