Summary

Romantic drama based on Colleen McCullough's bestselling novel, starring Piper Laurie and Mel Gibson. Tim is a picture of sheer physical beauty, a mild-mannered 24-year-old whom Mary Horton longs to take under her wing. The problem is that Mary is a woman in her 40s and Tim has a child-like IQ. What will everyone think if they have a relationship?

Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Mel Gibson starred in this low-profile romantic drama (adapted from the debut novel by Thorn Birds author Colleen McCullough) in between the first two Mad Max movies, and it couldn't be further from the murder and mayhem of those action adventures. Gibson plays a young man with a child-like IQ, who tumbles into a relationship with wary older woman Piper Laurie, who is teaching him to read. The sexual tensions between this odd couple keep sentiment at bay, and Gibson's performance as the wide-eyed innocent alerted audiences to the fact that there was more to the man than just action movies.
