Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Despite its naive, picture-postcard view of America, this showcase for teen singing sensation Britney Spears is hard to dislike. It's obviously targeted at her core audience of impressionable young girls and so addresses the topics that are of paramount importance to them: seeking independence from parents, spending time with friends and dealing with the hormonal imbalance called love. Simplistic in the extreme but not without charm, the film sees Spears and childhood friends Zoë Saldana and Taryn Manning on a road trip of discovery. Along the way, Spears belts out a few tunes (via in-car sing-a-longs and a karaoke contest), while the trio rediscovers the true importance of friendship. If you can cope with the high cheese factor, director Tamra Davis's rose-tinted movie is a mildly engaging journey through adolescent problem-page dilemmas, with naturally pleasing performances from Spears and the girls, and experienced support from elders Dan Aykroyd and, briefly, Kim Cattrall.
