Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Director Zhang Yuan first fell foul of the Chinese authorities with Mama, a sensitive tale about a mother and her mentally handicapped son, and he was hardly likely to atone with Beijing Bastards, which resulted in his blacklisting. This semi-documentary study of teenage delinquency focuses on the disillusion of post-Tiananmen Square youth with the party hierarchy and the social system it maintains and features subversive pop icon Cui Jian. Zhang's aggressive direction adds to the pace and punch of the picture, but style too often counts for more than content, and his preoccupation with provocative images makes it hard to identify with the characters.
