Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

At first, there's a whiff of Amélie about Tammy Riley-Smith's feature debut, with its jaunty music, haunted female protagonist and mysterious male lead. But it rapidly becomes clear that Delicious is not your standard romance. Louise Brealey stars as Stella, who has an unspecified eating disorder and spends her days glowering, smoking and wrestling with her inner demons. Fresh off the Eurostar, budding chef Jacques (Nico Rogner) moves into the flat above and sets about wooing her with dainty canapés. However, it soon turns out that Stella is not the only one hiding something... Sheila Hancock supplies the light relief as the pair's internet-dating neighbour, while Adrian Scarborough is a delectably curmudgeonly head chef. The film may be slight and a little predictable but it does pack a surprising punch - largely thanks to Brealey's anguished Stella.
