Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

A young warrior (Kodi Smit-McPhee) forms an unlikely friendship with a wolf in this prehistoric story of survival. What starts out as a standard rites-of-passage tale from director Albert Hughes (The Book of Eli) develops into something more refined as it explores the themes of friendship and resilience. We follow our two- and four-legged heroes as they endure harsh conditions, wince-inducing injuries, and terrifying foes that threaten to cut their adventure short. The often straightforward plot is helped by stunning cinematography, making the environment a supporting character in its own right. Smit-McPhee is terrific in a performance that relies more on movement than dialogue, tugging at the heart strings at the right moments, and his canine co-star is adorable, delivering a little comedy with some well-timed whining. Although the story is familiar, it's confidently told and will touch your heart.
