You can't travel through time on a shoestring budget but, with his feature debut, director Colin Trevorrow has a lot of fun trying. The film revolves around small-town supermarket worker Kenneth (Mark Duplass), who advertises for a time travel companion and sparks the curiosity of three journalists. As sultry, cynical intern Darius, Aubrey Plaza has the job of netting Kenneth and, despite his apparent lunacy, she is drawn in to his plan. There are laughs, thrills and spills as they undertake weapons training and a clumsy stealth mission to steal machine parts, and they also share the secrets that keep them living in the past. Meanwhile, head reporter Jeff (Jake Johnson) revisits his own romantic history while Darius's shy fellow intern Arnau (Karan Soni) takes a leap into the unknown in a much less subtle subplot. Though it has all the mystery of a sci-fi caper, Kenneth remains an enigma, and the question mark over his relationship with Darius provides the suspense. The finale may raise eyebrows, but this is an experience you'll want to relive.
