Crime thriller starring Maxwell Reed, Susan Shaw and Laurence Harvey. Two fairground employees - a wall of death rider and a boxer - make plans to rob their boss.
This seedy tale of greed and betrayal among funfair folk focuses on a stunt rider and a boxer, who put aside their rivalries to steal the boss's life savings. There's nothing new in the story and the performances of Maxwell Reed and Laurence Harvey have little to commend them. But director Lewis Gilbert's prying camera finds many dark corners behind the twinkling lights of the carnival stalls, and it's the thoroughly nasty atmosphere conjured up in a place dedicated to enjoyment that makes this unusually effective British movie worth watching. Its alternative title, Wall of Death (often used for TV screenings), dates from a 1953 reissue.
