Set in 2050, Netflix's first Korean original animated film is a love story involving an astronaut and a reluctant K-pop musician. Nan-young (voiced by Kim Tae-ri) was just a little girl when her mother died on a mission to Mars. Now training with Nasa to travel to the red planet herself, Nan-young falls in love with Jay (Hong Kyung), a talented but insecure songwriter. Will their potentially ultra-long-distance relationship survive? Director Han Ji-won's film emphasises romantic and pop elements over sci-fi, though the climax steers closer to action territory, complete with a melodramatic twist. But it's a glorious-looking romance, with expressive characters and detailed, Mamoru Oshii-style cityscapes. There's also an extraordinary psychedelic dream sequence, which resembles a cross between the stargate sequence from 2001: a Space Odyssey and Dumbo's pink elephants set piece. The story is a little slight but sweetly affecting and engaging, and is helped by the fact that Jay and Nan-young are fun together.
