A pen-pal correspondence between a lonely boy and a US soldier transforms both their lives in this simple celebration of love and family. Not only does the ten-year-old get the father figure he craves, but charming sergeant Johnny Messner also predictably finds romance with the youngster's newly divorced mum (Lori Loughlin) after deciding to visit the pair while on leave. Although the episodic narrative that unfolds hasn't much meat, it's packed with warmth and positive self-fulfilment messages, as the three emotionally scarred characters gradually reap the rewards of learning to trust again. Likeable central performances and some nice support, including Stefanie Powers playing a glam gran, add to the film's gentle appeal and help temper the heavy-handed faith references.
