Offering a stern investigation into religion, faith and history, this is a taxing, rigorous drama for those who like their arthouse films at the austere end of the spectrum. Inspired by real-life photographs from the late 19th century, the fictionalised story concerns Lucas (Elliott Crosset Hove), a Lutheran priest from Denmark who is sent to establish a parish in Iceland. Lucas oversees the building of a wooden church while trying - and largely failing - to integrate with the community. Written and directed by Hlynur Palmason, in the tradition of European auteurs like Ingmar Bergman and Carl Th Dreyer, it's a story of opposites, as Lucas comes to blows with muscular local Ragnar (Ingvar Sigurdsson). With frequent shots of the stormy landscape, this brooding tale requires considerable patience to become accustomed to its deliberate pacing. But relax into its rhythms and you will find beauty amid the bleakness.
