Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Adapted from a Dr Seuss story, this classy animated fable from the makers of Ice Age is a real treat for all ages. Horton the elephant (voiced by Jim Carrey) discovers a speck-sized world on a grain of pollen that is home to the city of Whoville, inhabited by the microscopic Whos. But Whoville is threatened with imminent destruction and, before Horton can even begin to save it, he must convince his fellow jungle folk that the place exists, and that he is not just suffering from some jumbo-sized delusion. The Mayor (voiced by Steve Carell) is the only Who able to communicate with Horton, and in addition to alerting his community to their peril, he also must convey to them that their salvation lies in a bigger, broader world that only he is aware of. This is terrific stuff - colourful, fast and fun. Kids will love it. So, too, will grown-ups, who additionally can ponder the philosophical ramifications of the film's world-within-worlds "multiverse". Elephants and ethics - quite a mix!
