Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Made immediately before his masterly Osaka Elegy, Kenji Mizoguchi's adaptation of Soseki Natsume's novel has been somewhat overlooked. At its core lies the contrasting social attitudes of two women, dutiful daughter Yukichi Iwata, who reluctantly accedes to her betrothal to Daijiro Natsukawa, and his older, more liberated English student, Kuniko Miyake. However, Mizoguchi paid scant regard to this chamber drama, even though it marked a notable stylistic departure, as he abandoned his now customary long takes and adopted a traditional Hollywood narrative approach, with editing, not camera movement, creating the rhythm and significance of the action.
