Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

This prettified 20th Century-Fox film version of Ernest Hemingway's novella is almost totally wrecked by the miscasting of Gregory Peck. He is much too nice to play the hard-drinking, macho-obsessed, animal-hunting hero suffering from flashback syndrome, as wrong here as he was in the later Moby Dick. But Ava Gardner, Hildegarde Neff and Susan Hayward are spot-on, seductively rivalling the African and Riviera landscapes and making Peck's life a misery. Studio hack Henry King, keeps the train rolling without ever realising that it's a rehash of Duel in the Sun with elephants.
