David Parkinson

In his feature debut director Lotfy Nathan shifts between gritty realism and gripping suspense, as he depicts the grindingly tough life of an illegal petrol vendor in the Tunisian city of Sidi Bouzid. Adam Bessa plays Ali, whose dream of migrating to Europe is dashed when his father dies, and he takes risks smuggling fuel to the Libyan border to pay the debts that threaten to make his younger sisters homeless. Lacking qualifications and prospects, Ali is confronted at every turn by social prejudice and corrupt or indifferent officials, and his narrowing options soon send him into despair. Inspired by Mohamed Bouazizi, whose actions helped trigger Tunisia's Jasmine Revolution, Nathan's study in forlorn survival is both revealing and wrenching, made all the more punishing and poignant by Maximilian Pittner's unflinching photography, Salima Maatoug's personal narration and Eli Keszler's emotive score.
