Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Re-creating the feud between the Emperor Akbar and his son Salim over his passion for the low-born dancer, Anarkali, this is one of the undisputed classics of Bollywood cinema. It's also one of the most sensual, with the lavish period trappings providing a fabulous setting for the intense love scenes between Dilip Kumar and Madhubala (who was to die tragically young nine years later). Indeed, it's this unforced juxtaposition between scale and intimacy that characterises K Asif's direction, although he's not slow to recognise the emotional value of a grandiose (full-colour) set piece, as proved by the celebrated Hall of Mirrors sequence.
