The first three Scream films were intended to form a complete trilogy that would conclude with Scream 3 in 1999. Over a decade later, this fourth entry manages to be more than a mere slasher curtain call and has a few devilishly smart tricks up its sleeve. Ten years after her last battle with Ghostface, Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) has published an inspirational book about her life. Naturally, the final stop on her promo tour is Woodsboro, where a fresh spate of killings reunites her with Sheriff Dewey (David Arquette) and writer/reporter Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox). With a new decade, though, comes new horror rules, not to mention a hip new cast of teenage suspects and victims (among them Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere, Rory Culkin and Nico Tortorella). Written and directed by original Scream team Kevin Williamson and Wes Craven, Scre4m offers a wickedly entertaining dissection of internet fame, creative paralysis and (what else?) horror-movie reboots. Although its visuals are saddled with an oddly soupy filter, and the script struggles to juggle its large cast, there are many positives to be found. The meta jokes are funny, the death scenes bring a suitably post-Saw level of gore, and the big twist is the best since the 1996 original. In short: it's a scream.
