Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Kidnapped by pirates as a youth and sold into slavery in Ireland before making his escape after six years, the Welsh-born Patrick returned in around AD 432 to convert his Irish captors and was ultimately canonised as their patron saint. Directed by Robert Hughes with an unconvincing mix of high melodrama, spiritual intensity and SFX miracles, this worthy, but laborious, historical drama at least manages to capture the difficulties inherent in Patrick's mission, as he seeks to establish not only Christianity, but also a system of education and a modicum of civil order. The veteran cast, led by Patrick Bergin as Patrick, brings dignity to the proceedings, and the Irish locations are stunningly captured.
