Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

US rapper Snoop Dogg struts his stuff as a reanimated avenger in this blaxploitation-style supernatural horror. Dressed in "mack daddy" finest, the canine-featured star cuts a classy figure as a murdered neighbourhood kingpin who comes back from the dead to get even with his killers. In the film's only ironic twist, it's privileged kids whose father escaped from the ghetto who unleash Snoop's hellfire - an unintentionally comic form of payback incorporating maggots, a demon dog, decapitation and buckets of unrealistic-looking blood. However, aside from the schlock elements, there's little to hold the attention, since the tale lacks atmosphere and even the visual effects are substandard. Director Ernest Dickerson relies too heavily on flashbacks to flesh out his weak plotline, while the hokey performances, particularly from psychic Pam Grier, give the overall picture a distinctly cartoonish feel.
