Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

The sailors-on-shore-leave theme may be familiar, but this version of the 1927 stage hit (with a totally new story) is immensely entertaining. Though no On the Town, and made when MGM's musical department was winding down, it still has all the studio know-how and a delightful cast. Jane Powell, Vic Damone and Tony Martin do well by the melodies - including More than You Know and Hallelujah! - Debbie Reynolds and Russ Tamblyn romp through an inventive routine in a fun-house, and best of all there's the irrepressible Ann Miller getting every ounce of humour from the lively script and tapping out Hermes Pan's exuberant choreography.
