David Parkinson
Winner of an Oscar for best costume and an honorary statuette, as well as the Grand Prix (then the highest prize of the festival) at Cannes, this is one of the most sumptuously coloured films ever made. Shooting in Eastmancolor and employing the theories of "synaesthesia" learned from Sergei Eisenstein, Teinosuke Kinugasa lovingly sculpts each image, whether it's from a battle or the doomed courtship of Machiko Kyo by the heroic samurai, Kazuo Hasegawa. Amid such physical beauty, it's too easy to forget the majesty of the performances, particularly Kyo's proud wife, who refuses to submit to either the lust of her suitor or the conventions of her time.
