Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Imagine a National Geographic take on The Descent (minus the nasty creatures) and the result would be director Alister Grierson's unsettling survival saga. A team of underwater explorers endures increasing, unexpected dangers after becoming trapped in Papua New Guinea's Esa'ala cave system after a cyclone hits. It's a scenario that was experienced for real by co-writer Andrew Wight (an associate of the film's executive producer James Cameron on many maritime documentaries), and the chilling panic attacks, claustrophobic thrills and vertigo-inducing gasps come thick and fast. It is let down slightly by the tritely scripted scenes between the driven Frank (Moulin Rouge! star Richard Roxburgh) and his rebellious son (Rhys Wakefield), while Ioan Gruffudd (Fantastic Four) simply goes through the motions as the expedition boss who gradually falls apart. However, it's the locations, eerie sets, special effects and marine photography that count here, and all are impressively spectacular.
