Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

John Cusack's quality control radar has been all over the place in recent years, but this thriller (direct-to-DVD in most countries) marked a new low. It's a tired compendium of serial killer clichés, with Cusack playing a detective struggling to convince his bosses that a murderer is preying on young prostitutes in the city - few bodies have turned up, so they are naturally sceptical. However, when his teenage daughter (Mae Whitman) becomes the killer's latest victim, he starts taking the law into his own hands, placing even more strain on his relationship with his detective partner (Jennifer Carpenter). Australian actor-turned-director Morgan O'Neill summons up some stylish Se7en-like wintry visuals but the mechanical plotting and performances strip the movie of any genuine suspense, while the final twist is just plain silly.
