Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

The hilarious and touching story of overweight Toronto hairdresser Craig Russell whose dream is to dazzle the world as a top-class female impersonator. His best friend, Hollis McLaren, is a certified schizophrenic who's also pregnant. How director Richard Benner shows these misfits sticking two fingers up at society as they liberate their fantasies makes a sympathetic, uncompromising and well-acted feel-good gay movie. Divisions within the gay community itself are also touched on with unsentimental candour (macho denim fags versus satin drag queens) for a well-rounded view of the way it was in the heady disco days, pre-Aids. The 1987 sequel Too Outrageous! was hackneyed and depressing.
