Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

A group of child evacuees in Second World War England find themselves in the care of the cruelly unsympathetic, alcoholic Freda Jackson, who keeps them in conditions of squalor, neglect and semi-starvation while she imbibes a steady diet of gin. Poet Dylan Thomas co-wrote the screenplay for this nasty but effective view of human nature at its worst, in which Jackson (repeating her successful West End performance) is powerfully compelling. She is helped by an excellent group of child actors, and a vast cast of British stalwarts, including Hermione Baddely and Dora Bryan in tiny roles.
