Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Three years after Percy Jackson & the Lightning Thief, the half-human son of sea god Poseidon pops up again, carried on a wave of the novels' popularity. Working from Rick Riordan's bestselling books, director Thor Freudenthal creates a world where Greek deities, humans and demigods coexist, with Logan Lerman reprising the starring role. His first film adventure was an underrated little gem, ideally designed for pre-teens, but the second is a bit sketchy, barely adequate to fill the void left by the Harry Potter franchise. This time, Percy and pals are away at "Camp Half-Blood" - the secret retreat of the demigods -, but peace is threatened, leading them to the ominous-sounding "Sea of Monsters" (aka the Bermuda Triangle). There, they must retrieve the fabled Golden Fleece, dodging obstacles that include a giant mechanical bull, a cyclops and the great sea beast Charybdis. The story often hits choppy waters and only just about stays afloat.
